A Beginner’s Guide to Buying a Telescope
A telescope offers an extended view of things and places that are not seen by the naked eye. Telescopes could provide a clear view of things that are miles and miles away. With the right telescope, a clear view of the surroundings kilometers away or a closer view of the night sky is possible.
A beginner could be easily confused on what type of telescope to buy. The reason for that confusion is because of the variety of products available in the market today. Some products could be very affordable but they could be built for another purpose, making the telescope useless in the process.
No Perfect Telescope
The variety of telescopes is being offered in the public to cater different types of hobbies. There are telescopes offered to the public that could be used solely for bird watching, there are also telescopes that are used solely for the night sky. There are also telescopes that could do these functions but they are considered "jack of all trades" especially the affordable ones. They could do those functions but their performance is not as par compared to those telescopes dedicated to a single function.
To be specific, a Dobsonian-mounted reflector telescopes or Dobs is a perfect type of telescope for the night sky viewing. For bird watching or long range land viewing, the well known and cheaper type of telescope for this purpose is the regular binoculars. Most refractor telescopes have the ability to observe the night sky as well as land viewing but they are not really that powerful unless they are upgraded. On the other hand, if you want a very powerful telescope that could do two functions flawlessly, Schmidt-Cassegrains or SCT telescopes should be sought out. This type of telescope could do two functions but with a disadvantage
–no wide angle lens and will require expensive add-ons.
